Edward Glaeser

As part of the Clarence Tow Lecture Series, the Economics Department in the Tippie College of Business is hosting“Will Cities Survive?” a public presentation by Edward Glaeser, who is the Fred and Eleanor Glimp Professor of Economics and Chairman of the Department of Economics at Harvard University.

Professor Glaeser has served as the Director of the Taubman Center for State and Local Government and as Director of the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston. He is a world-renowned leader in understanding the growth of cities and their role in the spread of innovation.

This public talk will focus on the question: Will cities survive during an age of pandemic and Zoom? During the 20th century, urban America reeled as factories fled from old industrial cities. Suburbanization reinvented America around the car. Yet some, but not all, of America's older, colder cities managed to reinvent themselves as capitals of the information age. Indeed, until 2020, places like San Francisco and New York City thrived as places of both pleasure as well as productivity. Pandemics are an old companion of city life, and COVID-19 showed the ability of disease to shut down face-to-face contact. America's cities can come back, but they need to do a better job of balancing the need to attract global talent and to care for the disadvantaged. Smarter government, rather than more or less government, is the crucial step forward.

A reception will follow at 1:30 p.m. Attendance is free and open to the public.

Event sponsored by the Economics Department in the Tippie College of Business and the Clarence Tow Fund.
