Professors Natalie Lira and Angela Hume will talk about their new books, Laboratory of Deficiency and Deep Care. They will engage in conversation about reproductive justice on the topics of abortion and the history of sterilization.

Natalie Lira is Assistant Professor of Latina/Latino Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of Laboratory of Deficiency. "Lira's multilayered research and analysis provide a powerful model for understanding and challenging the reproductive coercion of Mexican-origin youth in California state institutions and beyond."—Elena R. Gutiérrez

Angela Hume a faculty member of University of California Berkeley College Writing Programs. She is the author of Deep Care: The Radical Activists Who Provided Abortions, Defied the Law, and Fought to Keep Clinics Open. "An important record of the secret history of how an eclectic gathering of women poets, musicians, community-based health care workers, grassroots activists, and visionary volunteers created underground abortion service provision in Oakland and fought to defend clinics as Roe v Wade was won and then eroded. Reminds and inspires us to see the treasure of creative collective solutions." —Sarah Schulman
