Join us for our Iowa Archaeology panel at the free Iowa History Conference at the State Historical Society in Des Moines at 9 a.m. on June 6, 2024. This conference is FREE and open to the public, and there are multiple different panels throughout the day. Visit the website for more information!

  • John Doershuk, director and state archaeologist, Office of the State Archaeologist, University of Iowa
  • Bill Quackenbush,  tribal historic preservation officer, Ho-Chunk Nation
  • Jonathan Buffalo, historic preservation director, Meskwaki Nation 
  • Suzanne Buffalo, senior deputy clerk of court, Meskwaki Nation Tribal Court
  • Lance Foster, tribal vice chairman and tribal historic preservation officer, Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska
  • Lara Noldner, bioarchaeology director, University of Iowa of the State Archaeologist
  • Elizabeth Reetz, strategic initiatives director, University of Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist

 

We will be addressing the following questions and engaging in discussions with the audience:

What are some of the challenges as well as opportunities you have encountered in your role as either an archaeologist or a representative of your Tribal nation in consulting about the archaeological past of what is now known as Iowa? What have you learned and what has intrigued you? Please provide some specifics from your own experience and what your goals have been as part of preservation efforts focused on the archaeology of the state of Iowa.
