National Policy, Local Impacts: Voices from Mt. Pleasant

On Oct. 22, 2018 UICHR and Urban and Regional Planning will host a panel on the I.C.E raid that occured in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. The raid occured on May 9, 2018 when the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E) raided a precast concrete facility in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. The raid resulted in the arrest and detention of 32 men, gaining national attention. According to The Washington Times, the arrests resulting from the raid were part of a climbing average number of arrests per month (4,143) of individuals without criminal records under the Trump Administration. This panel will look at the impact this raid has had on the community and Iowa with immigration laws. On the panel, Natalia Espina will represent the Eastern Iowa Community Bond Project, which aims to “increase access to due process within the immigration justice system by providing bail funds and additional legal support to immigrants detained by Immigrations Customs Enforcement” (Bond Project). Tammy Shull will represent Iowa WINS, an assistance and advocacy ministry of the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Pleasant (represented also by Rev. Trey Hegar). The audience will be able to interact with the panelists and as questions about the raid, its aftermath, and its lasting effects.

Speakers: The panel will be moderated by Nicole Novak from the College of Public Health and the audience will hear from various speakers who have been affected or assisted with community efforts after the I.C.E raid in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. These speakers include:
