Title: Exploration of a New Evidence-Based Approach for Screening Hearing in School-Age Children
Presenter: Catherine Yrlas, Au.D., CCC-A

Dr. Yrlas is a Michigan native practicing audiology in Southern California. She is a licensed Audiologist with 19 years of service. She earned a master’s degree from The Ohio State University in 2005 and her clinical doctorate degree from the University of Florida in 2008. She has clinical experience in various settings, including private practice, speech and hearing clinics, inpatient and outpatient hospitals, and school districts.

Topic: This presentation is devoted to reviewing the critical steps needed in screening hearing in school-age children and reviewing a new evidence-based approach for identifying hearing loss in children at school more efficiently. This presentation gives an informative view of the current hearing screening protocol used in schools, and explains some of the limitations of this protocol in screening children between the ages of 3-6, children with middle ear pathology and children with high-frequency hearing loss, and the rationale for implementing objective measures into the current protocol.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
