The Nonfiction Writing Program's Bedell Distinguished Visiting Professor, Susan Steinberg, will read from her work. Her most recent book, Spectacle, was hailed by The New Yorker for its "bold risks and exploration of the boundaries of narrative and the possibilities of language and syntax." Steinberg is the author of The End of Free Love, Hydroplane, and Spectacle. The recipient of the Pushcart Prize, the National Magazine Award, and the prestigious United States Artist Fellowship, Steinberg holds a BFA in painting from the Maryland College of Art and an MFA in Creative Writing from UMass Amherst.

A regular contributor to such literary journals as Conjunctions, Bomb, and McSweeney's, Steinberg specializes in exploring hybrid forms of literature and multimedia forms of expression, incorporating her training as a painter and a writer in both her creative work and teaching. Steinberg serves as the head of the Creative Writing Program at the University of San Francisco. She is currently in residence at the UI Nonfiction Writing Program for the spring 2019 semester.
