18th Annual Daryl and Nancy Granner Distinguished Mentor Award Celebration

3:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019, Prem Sahai Auditorium in MERF

This celebration has become an annual highlight. Each year, the Distinguished Mentor Award has recognized one of our most important mentors, and the Distinguished Mentor Lecturer has given one of the best lectures of the year. 2019's event promises to follow that exciting tradition. This celebration was envisioned and is supported by Daryl and Nancy Granner.

Distinguished Mentor Awardee: Edward F. Bell, MD

Dr. Bell, Professor of Pediatrics, has an outstanding record of mentoring trainees, faculty and staff at all levels. By his example and with his guidance and leadership, he has influenced the lives and careers of many scientists and physicians at Iowa and around the world.

Distinguished Mentor's Lecturer: Richard S. Finkel, MD

Dr. Finkel, Division of Neurology at Nemours Children's Hospital led studies of the antisense oligonucleotides nusinersen to treat spinal muscular atrophy.  The drug halted disease progression, and in some infants, motor function improved. This is a dramatic example of translational research.

A reception will follow in the MERF Atrium.

The Distinguished Mentor Award and Distinguished Mentor’s Lecture are made possible through a generous gift from Dr. Daryl Granner, '58 B.A., '62 M.S., '62 M.D., and Nancy Granner, '58 B.A. Dr. Granner is a distinguished alumnus and professor emeritus and founding director of the F.O.E. Diabetes Research Center in the Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Institute.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
