Title: Complex turbulent boundary layers and wind turbine wakes: Measurements and modeling addressing challenges for onshore and offshore wind energy
Presented by: Dr. Corey Markfort, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering
University of Iowa
Abstract: With increasing demand for renewable energy and calls for environmental sustainability, larger wind power plants consisting of arrays of tall wind turbines will increasingly cover vast areas of land and sea. Accurate prediction of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow and interactions with wind turbines is important for plant design and control to maximize power production and minimize environmental impacts. New challenges in wind farm control and quantification of environmental impacts require advanced tools for prediction supported by measurements. This presentation will focus on efforts led by the Environmental Fluid Mechanics and Renewable Energy (EFRE) Laboratory to make, for the first time, measurements to validate wind turbine wake models using volumetric wake measurements of a utility scale wind turbine with Doppler wind LiDAR, and measurements of coupled wind-wave dynamics using two-phase, time-resolved, 3D flow measurements. I will also preview new tools for smart wind turbine control to quantify and minimize avian and bat collisions using analytical bat models, XPOL Radar, and an automated infrared video tracking system.
