The journey of historical discovery is all about finding out new things that change the way you see the world. The process of discovery not only shapes what you know, but it also shapes how you learn things all together.

The cookbook of Alice E. Pickard that is housed at the University of Iowa Libraries and Special Collections is an object that sparked an incredible journey all its own. This book, which has been shrouded in mystery for some time, elicits a series of intriguing questions such as “How did this cookbook get here?”, “Who is Alice?”, “Where did she come from?”, and “What is her story?”

Joshua Waldorf, an emerging museum professional and graduate from the University of Iowa with a BA in history, will answer all of these questions and more!

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
