Mississipi: An anthropocene river

"Over the Levee, Under the Plow" is a four-day mobile seminar to begin in Wisconsin at the site of the Bad Axe Massacre and to travel over the course of four days to the Quad Cities. The seminar seeks to position the agro-engineering of rural America within the broader framework of settler colonialism in order to attend to the historical, political and epistemic roots of the agricultural and environmental crisis. The program brings together Native leaders, students, local residents, artists, and distinguished scholars for a series of walking tours, lectures, and small group discussions to better understand the origins of the present engineered landscape and to build alliances for more just and sustainable alternatives. I’m attaching the overview poster and schedule; the full schedule is also available online at https://medium.com/anthropocenedrift/detailed-schedule-over-the-levee-under-the-plow-d43cc8e53326.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
