Cody-Rose Clevidence and Alexia Arthurs

Writers’ Workshop visiting faculty members, Alexia Arthurs and Cody-Rose Clevidence, will read from their work on Thursday, October 10th in the Frank Conroy Reading Room at 8pm.

Alexia Arthurs is the author of the short story collection, How to Love a Jamaican. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, Arthurs has been published in Granta, The Sewanee Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, Vice, and The Paris Review, which awarded her the Plimpton Prize in 2017. She was born and raised in Jamaica and moved with her family to Brooklyn when she was twelve. Zadie Smith writes of How to Love a Jamaican: “In these kaleidoscopic stories of Jamaica and its diaspora we hear many voices at once: some cultivated, some simple, some wickedly funny, some deeply melancholic. All of them convince and sing.”

Cody-Rose Clevidence is the author of Beast Feast, Flung Throne, and the chapbook, Perverse, All Monstrous (2017). They live in the Arkansas Ozarks with their new lion-hearted pup, Birdie. Writing for MAKE, one reviewer says of Beast Feast: “The poems constantly attempt to body forth a poetics of animality” and the collection “hurls itself at the challenge of creating a posthuman language with feral abandon, striving for a wilderness in language, of language, that might establish for us a vantage outside of language.”
