Dancers in Company Home Concert 2019

Dancers in Company, the University of Iowa’s premiere touring ensemble, presents their hugely popular home concert. Now in its 35th year, the company’s repertory explores the theme of “taking ground.” Curated by company directors Jessica Anthony and Alex Bush, this evening of dancing engages with current and historical social and political movements that bring marginalized voices forward, as well as abstract and aesthetic investigations of equity and space. UI Dance students will perform a thrilling concert and use workshops and public discussions to facilitate community conversations throughout Iowa. Dancers in Company: Taking Ground home concert performances will include the following works:

Borrowed Earth
Choreography by Alex Bush, in collaboration with the dancers
Borrowed Earth was developed using material created in weekly course-meetings with the entire company during fall 2018. As we explored the theme of “taking ground,” we engaged in movement research around ideas of identity and position, engaging empathy through performance, and communal choice/change. This work offers insight into our investigation of these themes.

Pillow talk: We are here again
Choreography by Christopher-Rasheem McMillan, in deep collaboration with the dancers

Sonata for Anyone Who Cares to Listen

Sonata for Anyone Who Cares to Listen explores the myriad sources of the choreographer’s own identity as a dancer and performer. The lighthearted narrative follows the poignant journey of a young explorer navigating the stage for the first time, and the characters she encounters introduce her to the magical world of the theater. The story simultaneously reminds both the audience and those behind the scenes not to take themselves too seriously.

Gabriel
Choreography by Armando Duarte, in collaboration with the dancers
Gabriel is based on composition by internationally known British artist Peter Gabriel. Using a colorful musical background (composed and performed by Peter Gabriel himself along with various international artists of different ethnicities), the choreography is inspired by the lyrics and soundscapes provided by his music.

I want to be, more aw-ware, nowww (lift)

I want to be, more aw-ware, nowww (lift) is a choreographic interpretation of Orrico’s transcription of Tristan Perich’s 1-Bit Symphony (Movements 1 and 2). As Perich describes it, 1-Bit Symphony is not a conventional recording, but rather, an object that "performs its music live" when it is turned on. This beautifully dense arrangement is stored on a microchip and housed autonomously in a cd jewel case; when plugged into a speaker, it manifests sound. This activation of Perich's 'live' sound (due to logistics, recorded sound will be used for Space Place performances), and the dancers’ recall of a deeply embodied movement score, both seem to echo how the performativity of objects/forms/concepts rely on our engagement to sustain their life-force.

P.O.V.
Choreography by Charlotte Adams, in collaboration with the dancers
P.O.V. formally investigates an intricately woven dance quartet viewed from numerous perspectives highlighting the dancer’s finely tuned cooperative abilities.
