Abstract:

In 2012 the world wave installed capacity was less than 5MW, mostly produced on a pre-commercial basis. In 2016, the global ocean energy capacity jumped up to 536MW; this is still less than 0.05% of the global capacity of hydro power and is less than 0.03% of the total renewable energy, in the same year. The sea, however, is a colossal reservoir of energy particularly high density. The total theoretical ocean energy potential is estimated t o be 29.5 PWh/yr, which is more than the US electric power needs in 2018. Despite its potential, wave energy conversion technology is not yet mature due to few challenges. This talk highlights some of these challenges and presents some recent advances in the area of modelling and control of wave energy converters.
