Join us for the final webinar in UICHR’s spring series, Renewing a Human Rights Agenda. This webinar will focus on the opportunities and challenges related to the human rights of Native Americans. Panelists will address the important topics of mental health, mascots, and land acknowledgments.

Panelists

Ann Laquer Estin is the Aliber Family Chair in Law at the University of Iowa, where she teaches Federal Indian Law, as well as courses in Family Law, Contracts, and International Family Law.

Kelly Montijo Fink (Apache / Mexican / Spanish), M.A., is a bilingual educator & international speaker. Kelly has a Masters of Arts in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Iowa and received a B.A. from Cornell College, double majoring in Anthropology & Spanish. She received a certificate with honors for completing a year-long study of “Language, Latin American, & European Studies” from the Fundación Ortega y Gasset in Toledo, Spain. Kelly has worked as a language professor for nearly 25 years. Since 2012 she has served on the Iowa Commission on the Status of Native American Affairs and she aligns herself with community improvement initiatives. Kelly is also a singer / songwriter & recording artist.  She's a two time NAMMY (Native American Music Award) winner & an Indigenous Music Award nominee (in Canada).  She uses her music and her public platform to empower those who hear to be resilient and courageous. 

Kelly Clougher, Ph.D. is the Associate Director, Outreach Services and Embedded Programs for the University Counseling Center at the University of Iowa. She works to raise awareness and advocate for marginalized groups through her clinical practice and outreach initiatives. She has a strong interest in issues related to racial/ethnic identities especially American Indian populations, LGBT identities, and concerns typically faced by women such as body image and eating disorders. In her clinical practice, Dr. Clougher uses interpersonal and cognitive behavioral therapies with an overarching feminist perspective. Her goal is to create a safe and comfortable environment and a collaborative working relationship in order to empower clients to achieve their goals in counseling. 

Carrie Schuettpelz was a homelessness policy advisor in the Obama Administration from 2009-2016. She was a Fulbright Scholar in 2006, which was awarded by the U.S. Department of State to study the East-West divide of the European Union in Copenhagen, Denmark. Schuettpelz's ongoing projects involve experiential learning, public policy curriculum, and undergraduate student success. She is a trained storyteller and teaches digital storytelling at a variety of levels. She is also at work on a novel. She is an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.
