The University of Iowa feels a responsibility to provide students, faculty and staff with an understanding of the complexities of challenging public policy issues from all perspectives. To further this mission, the Public Policy Center and the College of Law, in collaboration with the Iowa Board of Regents, will convene a series of moderated discussions among respected experts, policymakers and advocates with different perspectives on significant public policy issues of urgent public interest.

The first of this series is a discussion featuring a variety of perspectives on the challenges related to free speech in the ecosystem of social media. We will have a diverse panel of first amendment, industry and political perspectives discussing issues such as: Who, if anyone, should control what’s allowed online? Should there be more regulation around how tech companies operate? Specifically, should the regulations associated with Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act be modified, and if so, how and by whom? If not by regulation, how should we consider misinformation or other activities contrary to the public good that arise on social media? Future topics include: The Future of the Democratic Party, and The Future of the Republican Party.

These events are free and open to the public. If you are not comfortable attending in person, they will be live-streamed. Links to the livestream are in the descriptions of each session on the event website. This event will be held in the Old Senate Chambers of the Old Capitol.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
