 by Sun Kyoung Kim

Sun Kyoung Kim was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. Kim received two Masters Degrees, both in metals, from Sungshin Women’s University in Seoul, Korea and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. She is currently an Associate Professor of Metals/Jewelry at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Kim creates jewelry that involves participations of viewers to produce lively experiences. By wearing and interacting with her work, a small number of wearers create a more or less intimate or private and truly impromptu performance. She employs curved lines in the design and use precious metal, sterling silver to accentuate the elegance.

Kim has received a number of awards and scholarships including Brodie Fellowship from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Educational Endowment Scholarship from Society of North American Goldsmiths, and Niche Award from Rosen Group, Baltimore, Maryland. Kim has nationally and internationally exhibited her work in various exhibitions such as “Future Room” at Museum of Jewelry in Vicenza, Italy, “New Traditional Jewelry” at Sieraad International Jewellery & Silver Design Fair, Amsterdam, Netherlands, “Craft Forms” at Wayne Art Center, Wayne, Pennsylvania, “Materials: Hard &Soft” at Greater Denton Arts Council, Denton, Texas, and 4 solo exhibitions in New Mexico, Tennessee, Illinois, and Indiana.
