Interdisciplinary Care in the Rehabilitation of Complex Patient Care Situations

Dean Clark Stanford '87

The ongoing evolution of dental implant therapy has been critical to improved patient care. Ongoing improvements in planning, communication and digital workflows are key to outcomes of care. This presentation uses patient experiences to illustrate these principles. Clark Stanford DDS, PhD, MHA is Dean of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. He now holds the Edwin Green Chair in Dental Leadership. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa (BS, 1984; DDS, 1987; Certificate Prosthodontics, 1992 and PhD, 1992) and the University of Illinois Chicago (MHA, 2019). He serves on the NIH/NIDCR Research Council, Institute of Medicine of Chicago Board, NFED Research Council and others. He has published more than 200 research papers, and has led multiple consensus conferences on medical device design, clinical trials, health disparities, research collaboration and transformations in professional education.

2007-2022: What's Changed and What's Stayed the Same in Single-Tooth Implant Dentistry

Dr. Christopher Barwacz '07

Extraordinary changes have transformed the way single-tooth implant dentistry is executed since 2007. This one-hour didactic course will provide an overview of significant developments that have occurred over the past 15 years related to planning, placement, and restoration of single-tooth implant restorations. Specific areas of focus will be related to the transformation of workflows at various phases from analog to digital environments, and what potential developments can be expected in the next decade.

Christopher Barwacz, DDS, FAGD, FICD is an Associate Professor and Chair (DEO) of the Department of Family Dentistry, with a dual appointment in the Craniofacial Clinical Research Program (CCRP) at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. Dr. Barwacz received his DDS degree from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. He obtained his AEGD Certificate from Baylor College of Dentistry, Texas A&M Health Science Center, and subsequently completed an Implant Fellowship at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. Dr. Barwacz has clinical translational research funding in oral implantology, specifically related to transmucosal factors that optimize implant prosthetic and mucosal outcomes.

Autism Spectrum Disorder: Dental, Medical, Parental, and Social Perspectives

Dr. Polly Iben '97

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability affecting language, communication, and social interaction. Its prevalence has increased dramatically over the decades and is now found in 1 in 44 children. Therefore, dentists will likely have opportunities to treat people with autism. This course explores the complexities of ASD, treatment modalities, and suggestions from parents, on how a team approach and pre-planning can work to achieve the best possible appointment outcomes.

Polly Iben, DDS is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. In 1993 she left her decade long career in public broadcasting to attend Dental School at the University of Iowa. She received her DDS in 1997 and her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry, also from the University of Iowa, in 1999. Dr. Polly opened her private pediatric dental practice in September 1999, and greatly enjoyed treating patients, including kids and adults with special healthcare needs, for 21 years. She became Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry in 2003. Dr. Iben sold her private practice in 2018. She now teaches full-time and sees patients in the University of Iowa Pediatric Dentistry Department. She is Course Director of the D4 Clinical Experience and Co-Director of the D2 Pediatric Dentistry Course.

At the completion of the entire program, participants should be able to:

Stanford:

  • Describe the importance and value of the key features of an interdisciplinary team;
  • Summarize the role of planning, communication, and digital workflows in achieving predictable outcomes; and
  • Explain the best means to communicate with patients about risks and risk-based outcomes of care.

Barwacz:

  • Review and contrast developments in various phases of single-tooth implant dentistry over the past 15 years, to better understand how we arrived at our current best-evidence for patient-centered treatment;
  • Recognize the increasing role of digital technologies in data acquisition, case planning, and execution of therapy; and
  • Discuss how exponential technology will continue to rapidly change how we approach single-tooth implant dentistry for the next decade of practice.

Iben:

  • Discuss the current prevalence of ASD and be able to explain why the prevalence has changed so dramatically over time;
  • Identify the signs/symptoms of and possible risk factors for developing ASD; and
  • Summarize how to effectively communicate treatment strategies and appointment expectations with your dental team, the parents/guardians, and the patient, if possible, to achieve a successful appointment outcome.
