This course will address methodologies for teaching difficult histories in the context of K12 classrooms. Educators will use framing texts around the diary of Anne Frank (as aligned with an exhibition visiting campus in spring of 2022); and will use that text as a pathway to discuss and position teaching challenging histories through guided inquiry. Teachers who participate will learn about ways to engage in difficult dialogue around challenging histories in contemporary classrooms where these histories are often disparaged, or avoided outright. Teachers can earn 1 Iowa Licensure Renewal Unit upon successful completion of course requirements paid for by the Baker Teacher Leader Center Global Education Initiatives.

Participants will:

  • Identify real and imagined barriers to teaching difficult histories;
  • Identify and practice using key methodologies of inquiry based approaches to teaching difficult histories;
  • Develop a project that they are able to implement in their own classrooms around a challenging topic in social studies education;
  • Engage in synchronous and asynchronous discussions around teaching challenging histories and using inquiry-based approaches in the classroom.

Course Requirements:

  • Read, listen, and watch course materials provided in ICON;
  • Attend all synchronous sessions on zoom, June 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 9-10:30 a.m.;
  • Complete a curriculum development project;
  • Participate in all online asynchronous discussions;
  • Complete journal posts

This course is sponsored by the Baker Teacher Leader Center Global Education Initiatives in the College of Education.
