Program and Objectives

The landscape of restorative dentistry is advancing at an unprecedented pace due to evolving digital tools and workflows, biomaterials, and evidence-based approaches that provide the promise of patient-centered care in the most conservative manner possible. This full-day didactic CE program will address general and restorative dentistry topics germane to these developments from relevant experts in the Department of Family Dentistry. The course is targeted for dentists, dental assistants and dental hygienists.

"Integrating Digital Photography into Comprehensive Treatment Planning"

The role of photography in dentistry has recently expanded to virtually all aspects of clinical practice, from treatment planning and documentation to laboratory communication and marketing. This course will provide clinicians with an introduction on how to integrate digital photography into their day-to-day clinical practices, to elevate the quality of care for their patients.

At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:

• Identify the key photographs used in documentation, treatment planning, and case presentation; and
• Have working knowledge using basic software to communicate desired outcomes to laboratory technicians and patients.

"Demystifying Local Anesthesia Beliefs Based on Contemporary Research"

Providing safe and effective local anesthesia is one of the most important skills a dental practitioner should be confident in managing. Inability to deliver adequate pain control in clinical care can cause unnecessary patient fear and result in poor patient compliance for future care. This course will review the current best evidence to help ensure the most predictable outcomes with local anesthesia to benefit both the practitioner and patient.

At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:

• Distinguish the most common incidences and reasons why local anesthetic failures occur; and
• Discuss local anesthesia adjunctive delivery techniques and devices, with their corresponding indications for use.

"Integration of Contemporary Caries Management in Comprehensive Care"

Caries management continues to evolve and become ever more patient-centered, with the end goal of providing health, function, and often esthetics. This lecture will review how caries management can be optimized to the individual patient, and their specific needs, using a minimally invasive approach.

At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:

• Identify challenges on the treatment of patients with severe caries disease and incorporate tooth preservation strategies in their comprehensive management; and
• Discuss current evidence and apply biological principles to support clinical decisions and conservative options to deliver minimally invasive, functional and aesthetic treatments to patients.

"Anterior Resin Composites in Daily Practice – Achieving Optimal Esthetics"

Esthetics is part of our everyday world which includes dentistry. This has resulted in patients’ expectations and demands for great esthetic results in any dental procedure. Anterior resin composite restorations are a common procedure in any general practice, and they can be done with great esthetic results that can satisfy the patient and the practitioner. This presentation will provide the dental team with tips and tricks with very practical and immediate application to obtain great esthetic results using resin composites in your daily practice.

At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:

• Discuss how to determine the optimal shade for direct anterior composites; and
• Recognize the differences between new simplified shades of resin composites.

"Leveraging Digital Tools for Treatment Planning Single-Tooth Implants"

Digital tools and their associated workflows are rapidly transforming the methods that are used to plan and execute multidisciplinary single-tooth implant therapy. This lecture will review current best practices, as well as how to utilize digital workflows to optimize patient-care outcomes.

At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:

• Explain strategies to enhance interdisciplinary planning and communication of single-tooth implant cases leveraging digital tools to achieve predictable restorative and esthetic outcomes; and
• Discuss the role of digital technologies in data acquisition, case planning, and execution of therapy.

"Evolution of Zirconia and Novel Graded Translucent Zirconia Materials"

Zirconia continues to permeate applications in esthetic and restorative dentistry, with an increasing diversity of material choices to select from. This course will review recent updates in esthetic, mechanical, and clinical properties to modern zirconia oxide materials.

At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:

• Differentiate between several types of zirconia based on their composition, yttria content and gradient; and
• Discuss how to decide the material of choice in different clinical situations.

Program Faculty

Dr. John Syrbu is a general dentist and clinical instructor in the Department of Family Dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. Upon graduation, he completed a GPR at the Minneapolis VA. After several years in private practice in Minnesota, he returned to Iowa City and the College of Dentistry. Outside the College, John provides seminars and hands-on workshops in dental photography.

Dr. Robert Bowers joined the Department of Family Dentistry in 2020 as an Assistant Professor after serving as the Dental Director at the Meskwaki Health Clinic with the Indian Health Service. Dr. Bowers’ research involves fear based dental considerations including local anesthesia techniques and etiologies for pain management inadequacies in clinical practice.

Dr. Marcela Hernández is from Bogota-Colombia where she received her DDS degree from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. She obtained her MS degree and Certificate in Operative Dentistry from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics in 2001 and her MBA degree from Tippie College of Business in 2019. She joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics as a faculty member in 2003 where she is currently a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Dentistry. She is a group leader for D4 students, and maintains an intramural faculty practice with an emphasis in cariology and conservative and esthetic dentistry.

Dr. Marcos Vargas received his DDS degree from Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru in 1985. He attended a two-year AEGD program with emphasis on restorative dentistry in Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, New York. He received the Certificate in Operative Dentistry and Master of Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1994. He currently maintains an intramural practice with a focus on esthetic and CAD/CAM dentistry, and is an invited speaker on these topics nationally and internationally.

Dr. Christopher Barwacz is an Associate Professor and Chair (DEO) of the Department of Family Dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. Dr. Barwacz serves as the Predoctoral Implant Program Director in the Department of Family Dentistry. He is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, a Fellow in the International College of Dentists, serves on the Academy of Osseointegration’s Fellowship & Certificate Steering Committee, and is a member of the International Association for Dental Research, the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Association, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU). He maintains an interdisciplinary faculty intramural practice limited to restorative and implant dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics.

Dr. Anvita Maharishi received her dental degree (BDS) from Devi Ahilya University in India. She also completed a fellowship in Oral Implantology in India. She maintained private practice for five years in general dentistry with special emphasis on Implants and Esthetics. Dr. Maharishi moved to Los Angeles in 2016 to pursue a one-year advanced clinical training in esthetic and restorative dentistry at UCLA, School of Dentistry. Dr. Maharishi completed her Master of Science degree in Biomaterials and Clinical Dentistry Science at University of Alabama Birmingham School of Dentistry and worked on wear with ceramic-based dental materials. Dr. Maharishi completed a 3-year advanced graduate education in Prosthodontics at Harvard School of Dental Medicine along with a Master of Medical Science (Oral Biology) degree. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics.

Pre-registration is recommended at least two weeks before course date – Sept. 16, 2022.

Cancellations or Refunds:

Fees paid will be refunded less a $55 per person processing fee following notice of cancellation. Refunds will not be granted for cancellations received after the course begins. All refunds will be credited to your credit card. If insufficient enrollment necessitates canceling a course, all fees will be refunded.

Continuing Education and Record Keeping:

A CEU verification will be provided (by email following the program) only for those individuals completing/submitting a CEU card at the completion of the program. Credit will be appropriately adjusted for those individuals who do not attend the entire program. All attendees are encouraged to submit a CEU card which will ensure that a letter documenting attendance will be sent following the program. The University of Iowa College of Dentistry designates this activity for 6.5 hours continuing education credit (0.65 CEU)

Football Tickets:

Tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis. Tickets for Iowa vs. Michigan on 10/1/22 are available at $127 each plus a $1 per ticket handling fee (limit 2 tickets per registration). Ticket requests will be filled until supply is exhausted. To order tickets, you must register and prepay for the continuing education program. Football tickets are again mobile this year. Your electronic football tickets will be texted/emailed to you prior to game day. You will need to display these items on your cellphone when you arrive on Saturday. Tickets will not be mailed. Payment for tickets cannot be refunded except when ticket supply is exhausted during the pre-registration period. Tickets cannot be transferred with a registration to another course.

Parking:

Parking is included with the course registration. All registrants must be pre-registered to gain entrance to the Dental visitor’s parking lot. Bring your course confirmation letter with you to ensure admittance to the lot. Otherwise, you may be directed to a remote lot.

Comfort Zone: 

Although every effort is made to have a comfortable temperature in the meeting room, we realize everyone’s comfort zone is different. Please bring a jacket or sweater in case the room is too cool for your comfort.
