If you’ve ever wanted to make your own envelopes, or cut your printed pieces into shapes without having to do each one by hand, this class is for you. Dies can be used hundreds of times to give you both cuts and scoring lines for any shape that you can imagine. Using a Vandercook proof press, learn how to fit the press so that it will accommodate a die, and cut on the press in much the way that you would print. Get comfortable with putting the die blanket on the cylinder, taking it off, and positioning the die on the press. We will also go over the correct way to send out for a die. No experience necessary.
Roni Gross is a book artist who trained first as a musician and then as a choreographer. She is interested in the theater of the book, it’s pacing, the music of language, and the resonance of color. She has been issuing multiples for 21 years under the imprint Zitouna, and limited edition letterpress printed books that are collaborations with the sculptor Peter Schell under the press name Z’roah. Roni Gross co-published The Vandercook Book, with Barbara Henry, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Vandercook press and a show of its contents are traveling the country. She currently teaches at The Center for Book Arts and has done workshops at Penland, Pratt and The New School. Her work is in the collections of The New York Public Library, The Library of Congress, Harvard, and many other public and private collections.
Sponsored by the UI Center for the Book and the Book Arts Club.
