Please join the UICB at the Spring Diptych Reading. Diptych is a biannual collaborative reading series between the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and the University of Iowa Center for the Book that strives to highlight the intersections of visual poetry and artists’ books. By offering readings and work samples in a cross-disciplinary framework, we hope to build community and establish shared common ground as artists in a world where the line between visual and language arts grows increasingly blurry every day.

Carolyn Liu is a candidate for the MFA in Poetry at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. She has been interested in experimenting with form lately, to varying effect. Contrastingly, her physical whereabouts are less varied most of the time you can find Carolyn holed up in her house re: social distancing guidelines, but occasionally she will come out to bask in the sunlight and natural spaces.

Jocmarys Viruet Felicianois a papermaker and book artist from Puerto Rico currently finishing her MFA at the University of Iowa Center for de Book. She has a BA in fine arts from the University of Puerto Rico, Recinto de Mayagüez and has worked as an intern at the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio. She worked as an assistant of Tim Barret at Rare Book School and the UICB Paper Research & Facility at Oakdale. She is a recipient of the Iowa Arts Fellowship and the Graduate Diversity Fellowship. Jocmarys has given various workshops of bookbinding at the Museo Casa del Libro in San Juan Puerto Rico and her first papermaking experience was in 2014 while being an exchange student in South Korea. Her artistic practice focuses on her experiences as an islander, exploring her ancestry, the concept of healing and identity, returning to the cosmovision of the native people of the Caribbean, the tainos while, focusing on the qualities of fiber, textile and the book form.

Midori Fujioka is gosei, a fifth generation American of Japanese descent with roots in California and Hawai'i. She teaches Japanese film studies and Asian Pacific American history/herstory for many years. Fujioka is working on her first poetry collection.

Amy Childress is a book artist, writer, and arts educator in Iowa City, IA. She received her MLS from the University of Iowa and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. In the Summer of 2019, Childress received a project grant from the Iowa Arts Council to develop a mobile book arts studio. She is an advocate for inclusive art education, and has taught workshops for adults, teens, and kids at numerous libraries around the Iowa City area, as well as for the Iowa Youth Writing Project. Childress grew up next to the Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City. She first fell in love with book arts at the Book Arts Program at the University of Utah. Her work explores the subtle moments that happen in nature and within interpersonal relationships. She is the Secretary/Treasurer for the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Bookworkers. 

Margaret Yapp is from Iowa City, Iowa. Her poems have appeared in Cutleaf Journal, New Delta Review, Peach Mag, the minnesota review, and elsewhere. Margaret is an MFA candidate at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. You can find her on the internet @bigbabymarg and margaretyapp.com.

Madison Bennett is a lettering artist and MFA Candidate at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. She thinks a lot about calligraphy, parchment, and contemporary palimpsests.
