Visiting Artist Richard Flavin

Join us on Friday, June 22nd at 4:30pm in Room W55 Chemistry Building for an artist lecture with Richard Flavin. Richard will talk about his life in Japan, accompanied by a DVD presentation. Examples of finished artworks will be on display including prints, books, collages and recent kamiko garments which were made in collaboration with Indian artisans and Richard’s wife Ryoko Haraguchi.

Richard Flavin is a native of Boston, Massachusetts, where he graduated from the Art Institute of Boston majoring in graphic design and printmaking. A resident of Japan since 1970, he studied Japanese woodblock printmaking for 2 years at Tokyo University of Fine Arts. He has been a frequent instructor at the Paper and Book Intensives. At present he is a visiting teacher of handmade paper related arts at Tohoku University of Art and Design. He resides with his wife Ryoko in Tokyo and works at his studio (Jionji Press) in Saitama Prefecture.

Ryoko Haraguchi graduated from Otsuka Textile School in Tokyo, Japan in 1981. Her career includes work as a fashion planning designer and a freelance textile and fabric designer. She teaches part-time at Mushashino Art College and Tohoku University of Art and Design. She established her own design studio Sind and Gallery Sind in 1992. Her work has been featured at exhibitions in Japan, New York, London, Geneva, Amsterdam, San Francisco, and Ahmedabad, India. Her work can be seen here.
