My Iowa Story

The University of Iowa has been a formative character in the life story of thousands of students, faculty and family members.

My Iowa Story is an opportunity for storytellers from the UI community to share a collection of life-altering moments influenced in one way or another by their experience in Iowa City. The series of evening events are part the UI’s Week of Inspiration.

Peter Aguero, host of The Moth Radio Hour heard on public radio stations across the country, will lead each storytelling session. The Moth celebrates the ability of stories to honor both the diversity and commonality of human experience, and to satisfy a vital human need for connection. My Iowa Story aims to do the same within the context of the UI.

Guests of My Iowa Story sessions will hear narrative of a wide array of personal experiences. This evening will include stories from:

  • Christine Ralston, a speech from a beloved university figure gives the woman the strength to persevere through a difficult situation
  • Bob Osterhaus, a man's entire life is shaped after a chance knock on his Hillcrest dorm door in 1950
  • Nate Kaeding, an athlete deep in a critical crossroads is given an unexpected assist that makes clear a path to future success

A welcome reception with hors d’oeuvre and refreshments will occur from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. The program begins at 5:30 p.m. During the session, inspired guests will also be invited to share their Iowa story and become part of the “My Iowa Story” program. Each member of the UI community has their own story, and it connects us in a remarkable way.

RSVP encouraged by clicking on the "I'm Going" button on the event page, and following the login instructions. Friends and Alumni will be prompted to create an account the first time they register for a University of Iowa event. Please contact if you encounter any technical issues.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact the Office of the President in advance at 319-335-3549.

It was a great experience and I think it would be beneficial for students to attend.
