Dr. Heather Sinclair will be giving a lectured titled, "No Room for Maria at the Inn": Race, Nation, and the Restriction of Maternity Care in El Paso, Texas: 1922-42.
Heather Sinclair is an Assistant Professor of History at Dixie State University. Her research focuses on the history of reproduction, midwifery, childbirth, and public health in the late nineteenth- and twentieth century US viewed through the lens of race, gender, sexuality, and settler colonialism. She has a background in professional midwifery and cross-border activism. Her book manuscript, Birth City, drawing from critical race and women-of-color feminist theories, examines battles in the twentieth-century border city of El Paso, Texas over reproduction, motherhood, midwifery, the medicalization of childbirth, infant mortality, and vital statistics. She has also published an article on the history of tuberculosis and race in the Southwest for which she received the 2017 W. Turrentine Jackson Prize. She holds a B.A. from Duke University and received a Ph.D. in history in 2016 from The University of Texas at El Paso.
