"Curious by Nature: Social Vulnerability in Natural Disasters" with Dr. Eric Tate

In Iowa, we’re no strangers to bracing for storms, especially when it comes to protecting properties against costly damages. However, floods don’t affect everyone equally and there is a social side of natural disasters that is not always considered. Allocation of funds for emergency planning is based on floodplain models, but traditional models don’t identify locations of the most vulnerable groups of people that are often injured and displaced due to natural hazards.

Dr. Eric Tate, an associate professor of geographical and sustainability sciences at the University of Iowa, uses social vulnerability models to study how natural disasters disproportionately affect some populations more than others.

Join us at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 27 to learn more about the societal impacts of natural disasters and find out how Dr. Tate hopes to improve the accuracy of flood modeling to help communities protect their most vulnerable people. This event is free but registration is required.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
