Al-Mutanabbi Street Reading
Mar 5, 2023
03:30 PM - 04:30 PM
Old Capitol Museum, Senate Chamber
21 North Clinton Street, Iowa City, IA 52240
Join us in the Old Capitol Senate Chamber for a reading dedicated to freedom, equality, and social justice in honor of the Al-Mutanabbi Street bombing in Baghdad, Iraq. This attack on academia and culture on March 5, 2007 inspired a book arts response in the form of an annual community reading. Each year, poets, writers, artists, teachers, and students are encouraged to organize readings all around the world. This year, one will take place at the center of the University of Iowa campus.
The reading is set to start at approximately 3:30 p.m., following the Piano Sunday's music recital (free and open to all). Guests are invited to join for both.
This programming is in conjunction with current exhibition Shadow and Light: Honoring Iraqi Academics, now on display in the Old Capitol Museum.
Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
