In this one-day symposium -- part of our yearlong Mellon Foundation-funded Sawyer Seminar on “Imagining Latinidades: Articulations of National Belonging” -- three speakers will examine the potentials and pitfalls of imagining Latinidades in the Midwestern U.S. Building off the past success of the Latina/o Midwest Symposium, this kickoff event for the spring semester will draw attention to the ways in which Latina/o/x space and identity might be imagined and practiced outside of traditionally recognized Latina/o/x enclaves.

Speakers include the following: Theresa Delgadillo is Professor of Comparative Studies and Program Director of Latina/o Studies at The Ohio State University. Her scholarship is devoted to exploration of spirituality and religion, African Diaspora and Latinidad, and Latino/as in the Midwest, interrogating the intersections among gender, sexuality, race, and nation. Lilia Fernandez is Associate Professor and Henry Rutgers Term Chair in Latino & Caribbean Studies and the Department of History at Rutgers University. Her scholarship has contributed greatly to understandings of Latina/o/x people in the midwest (particularly Chicago). Sujey Vega is Assistant Professor of Women and Gender Studies at Arizona State University whose research explores the everyday lived experiences of Latina/o/x belonging and traces the way Latina/os make their own notion of home in the U.S. This event will be held at the Iowa City Public Library.
