Spring Wildflower Hike

Celebrate spring with a wildflower hike through the University of Iowa-managed woodland at Macbride Nature Recreation Area! Attendees will learn about Iowa’s native spring flowers and their role in a healthy ecosystem. The hike will begin at the Main Parking Lot with a short introduction before we set out on the 1.5 mile Eagle Lakeshore trail. Click here to see a map.
Attendees should bring a filled water bottle, wear hiking shoes or boots, and wear clothes that can get dirty. The hike will take about an hour.
The trail is rugged through old growth woodland which is a remnant of the Historical Big Grove Woodland. It is in an ecologically sensitive area, so no picking of the plants or flowers, please. Many of the plants are rare and exist no where else in the County. Many also are long lived plants which can take a decade or more to reach their first bloom.
MNRA is undergoing well work, so running water is not currently available.
Rain date: May 6
Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact in advance at
